Five important facts every trailer owner must know
- Trailer coupler locks, (hitch locks, tongue locks) are all very easy to defeat. Thieves attach the "locked" trailer coupler to their tow vehicle with chain or rope and pull the trailer out of sight or they use a special device that just clamps around the locked coupler and hooks directly to their tow vehicle.
- Law enforcement officials recommend wheel locks for trailer security.
- Trailer theft is a huge problem and it's rapidly getting worse.
- To thieves, a trailer means money on wheels -- an easy target asking to be stolen.
- Trailer insurance coverage alone is not enough protection. If you leave your trailer unsecured and it’s stolen, you’ve got to pay the deductible, deal with aggravation, down time and inconvenience plus likely increased premium rates and possible cancellation of your policy.

Tips on Preventing Trailer Theft
- Consider purchasing a secondary lock for your trailer, such as one that will immobilize the wheel. These are much like the bars used to lock steering wheels but are used on the tires of a trailer.
- You may consider putting a stripe of special colored paint on your trailer. This will make your trailer readily identifiable as yours. Photograph the trailer and keep these photos in a secure location for future reference.
- Mark a personal identification code number in the frame of the trailer in a location known only by you and filed away to present to law enforcement if the trailer is stolen.
- Consider small GPS tracker devices that can be placed in a secure but hidden location on the trailer. Some security firms will provide these and assist with monitoring the location for you. Others can be programmed and read from software on your computer.
- Use locking bolts to secure tags so that thieves have a hard time removing them.
